MARIETTA, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) – A lucky dog will now get a second chance at life thanks to two caring doctors.
Dr. Michael Good and Dr. John Keating performed surgery Thursday on a Labrador mix named “Sheldon” that they believe was hit by a car, dislocating both of his hips.
Dr. Good owns Town and Country Veterinary Clinic in Marietta. He teamed up with Dr. Keating, an orthopedic surgeon for humans, nearly a decade ago to help homeless animals with major injuries.
“We’re kind of working outside of the box a little bit, but the end result is, we’re saving these animals lives,” explained Dr. Good.
Normally, a procedure like the one Sheldon needed would cost thousands of dollars, which is a price tag much too high for animal shelters to afford.
“These are dogs or cats who are doomed if we don’t fix them,” explained Dr. Keating. “They’re going to put them down.”
Dr. Good said Sheldon crawled to a home in Moultrie looking for help and a woman there contacted animal control to get the dog some help. The animal control officer then connected with the doctors and drove all the way to metro Atlanta to help the dog.
“If we’re not doing things to try to make a difference, then we’re on the wrong path,” said Dr. Good.
Dr. Keating fixed one of Sheldon’s hips Thursday, but the Labrador will need a second surgery to repairthe other hip in about six to eight weeks.
